La famiglia è antichissima e si vuole abbia origine dalla signoria di Champeaux, di cui ebbero il sovrano dominio. Rovero venne in Italia con Guido, duca di Spoleto. Era nobile barone di Borgogna e nell'888 fabbricò sulle rive del Clitunno un castello cui dette il proprio nome, e del quale ebbe investitura comitale dal duca Guido, confermata poi dall'imperatore Lamberto (896). L'imperatore Federico II, nell'agosto 1226 confermò Tancredi nel dominio feudale di quel castello e di quelli di Figline e di Bagno. Ebbero più volte la podesteria e il capitanato del popolo e furono gonfalonieri e senatori di varie città d'Italia fra cui Orvieto, Firenze, Bologna, Perugia e Macerata.
