Ritenuta da alcuni scrittori, di origine spagnuola, e secondo altri, originaria di Gozzo, nell'isola di Malta e portata in Napoli nel sec. XIII. Godette nobiltà in Lucera. Don Pietro, valoroso condottiero d'armata di re Ferdinando il Cattolico che sconfisse i francesi presso S.Germano, fu dall'imperatore Carlo V insignito del titolo di conte. Maurizio ebbe conferma del titolo nel 1638, e Giuseppe, capitano nel Real Reggimento Carolina, ottenne il 26 marzo 1806 l'intestazione del detto titolo nel cedolario di Terra di Lavoro. Questa famiglia fu riconosciuta di nobiltà generosa dalla Real Commissione dei titoli in occasione delle prove dell'aspirante a sottobrigadiere delle RR. Guardie del Corpo, Maurizio juniore.
