Originaria dell'Alemagna, si crede sia un ramo degli antichi Conti di Cleves e di Juliers, avendo la stessa arme. Il più antico che si conosca, di questa famiglia, è il Cavaliere Ugo, vivente verso la fine del XI secolo, il quale nel 1091 fece atto di riconoscimento di un feudo all'Imperatore. Arnolfo, di lui figlio, fu Priore di S. Orso e, nel 1140, fu consacrato Vescovo di Aosta. Nel 1195 i signori d'Raviso godevano la signoria e la giurisdizione di tutto il mandamento di Avise, consistente non solo nella parrocchia di questo nome, ma ancora di quella di Valgrisenche, e godeva le rendite di Runa Lyverogne e parte di S. Nicola di Civoyes con le loro dipendenze. La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata.
