Famiglia antica oriunda da Tronzano nel Vercellese, la quale partecipò nel consortile nobile di Vintebbio. Le prime memorie sicure ci ricordano un Giacomo, il quale era dottore di leggi, e viveva a metà del secolo XV. Suo figlio Giovanni fu podestà di Tronzane e di Moncrivello. Ebbe costui due figli Antonio e Stefano, entrambi notai. Da Stefano discesero Carlo Giovanni e Carlo Francesco. Quest'ultimo è lo stipite della linea di Gifflenga, essendo stato infeudato l'8 luglio 1722 e investito il 27 settembre di questo feudo con il titolo signorile; feudo che venne eretto in titolo comitale a favore del suo nipote Carlo Francesco (defunto Vercelli, 30 dicembre 1817), di Alessandro, il 17 agosto 1772. Questo ramo ebbe termine con suo figlio Alessandro (nato Vercelli, 19 ottobre 1774), che fu ufficiale del Regno italico, quindi tenente generale sardo. Era stato creato cavaliere dell'Impero francese il 15 gennaio 1809 e successivamente barone il 14 aprile 1810. Carlo, Giovanni, che fu notaio, ebbe dalle sue nozze con Anna Maria Berta, Stefano e Giampetro. Quest'ultimo, che fu avvocato, ebbe Carlo Giovanni (defunto Santhià, 12 agosto 1801) che assunse il nome De Berta, e che fu infeudato di Camo (Alba) e sua borgata il 26 aprile 1761 con titolo comitale. Stefano, che fu mastro uditore camerale, fu infeudato di Donato (Biella) l'11 marzo 1724 e investito l'11 successivo maggio stesso anno col titolo comitale. Sposò Marta Clarinetti, e furono suoi figlli, fra gli alri Giuseppe Antonio e Maurizio, dal quale ultimo origina la linea di S. Raffaele. Giuseppe Antonio (nato Torino, 2 marzo 1712, defunto 26 agosto 1795), che fu investito del feudo il 10 gennaio1735, ebbe per figlio Stefano (nato Anthià, 8 febbraio 1739), il quale procreò Luigi (nato a Fogliazzo, 2 giugno 1797), che fu capitano, e che dalle sue nozze con Rosa Viani d'Ovrano Ebbe Ernesto (nato Montanaro, 28 ottobre 1838). Sposò costui (1861) Camilla Viani D'Ovrano, e da queste nozze nacquero Luigi (nato a Montanaro, 9 marzo 1870), che è ufficiale del R.
