Un'antica tradizione, concordemente accolta dai più autorevoli storici e genealogisti senesi, farebbe discendere questa famiglia da quella feudale dei conti di Sarteano e di Chianciano, che sullo scorcio del secolo XIII si diramò nelle due stirpi dei Manenti e dei R. Certo è che in autentici documenti orvietani si trova già nel 1216 menzione di un Rimbotto da Sarteano, che poi nel 1230 fu col fratello Bolgarello bandito nel capo da Orvieto come traditore di quel Comune per essersi dato ai Senesi, e quindi per lodo arbitrale 30 giugno 1235 del cardinal di Palestrina veniva con tutti i suoi congiunti reintegrato nell'avito possesso della terra di Chianciano. Lo stesso personaggio, insieme ai fratelli e ai due figli di un altro Rimbotto, vengono ricordati come appartenenti alla famiglia dei conti di Sarteano in un Breve 7 dicembre 1250 di papa Innocenzo IV.
