En el valle de Aibar, en Navarra, hay un lugar llamado Rio de Yuso y otro llamado Rio de Suso, los cuales parece que pertenecian a un mismo señor, en cuyo palacio se veian por armas dos rios, por lo cual se llamaba el palacio de los rios, y su dueño se designaba con el título de señor de Rios o de los Rios, quedando este nombre por apellido a sus ilustres sucesores. En el valle de Soto Bermud, en Galicia, hay un territorio que se llamó tierra de los Rios, cuyo señorío tuvieron los del linaje de Gutiérrez, por lo cual se llamaron Gutiérrez de los Rios, nombre que conservaron sus sucesores por línea recta, usando algunos descendientes sólo el de Gutiérrez y otros solamente el de Rios; y así afirman los genealogistas que los Rios y los Gutiérrez proceden de un mismo tronco. Además de los referidos señoríos hubo en el lugar de Proaño otra antiquísima casa llamada de los Rios, y otra en el valle de Cabuerniga. En fin, sería poco menos que imposible hacer mención de todos los antiguos solares que tuvieron los diversos linajes del apellido Rios, siendo también árdua y aventurada empresa el pretender reducirlos todos a un solo y mismo origen.
