Dice Barrellas, en su Historia de los Condes de Barcelona, que la antigüedad y grandeza de este linaje catalán es anterior a los tiempos en que los moros invadieron España. Mosén Jaime Febrer afirma en sus Trovas que los R. fueron señores del estado de Peralada desde tiempo inmemorial, "aun antes de haber Condes de Barcelona, cin conocer ni pagar feudo en todo su distrito", y cita a Hugo de R., señor absoluto de Peralada, que sirvió al rey aragonés don Jaime I "el Conquistador", de quien era pariente muy cercano, en la conquista de Valencia. Y don José Pellicer escribió: "La casa de R., condes de Peralada, es de las más antiguas, de las más ilustres y de mayor calidad del Principado de Cataluña, sin que en ella se haya quebrado la baronía, recaído en hembra, ni pasado a línea transversal". Tomaron los R. su apellido del nombre del castillo y estado de R., que estaba enclavado en el Pirineo catalán confinando con el Condado de Rosellón. Corrobora igualmente la gran antigüedad de este linaje el que asegura que por los años de 986 gozaba del título de vizconde de R. Dalmau de R., quien acompañó al conde Borrell en la conquista de Barcelona. Familia que ya era muy noble y principal en remotos tiempos, no es extraño que aparezca íntimamento unida a la historia de Aragón y que en el transcurso de los siglos enlazara con muchas de las más importantes casas aragonesas y catalanas. ...
