Rochemaure est aujourd'hui un chef-lieu de canton de l'arrondissement de Privas. Ses premiers seigneurs connus furent les Adhémar. En 1209, «l'évêque de Viviers, reçut de Giraud Adhémar, le château de Rochemaure, comme témoignage éternel de la piété des Adhémar, mais il se contenta de l'hommage de ce seigneur et lui restitua le château à titre de futur fief épiscopal.» La vérité est que Giraud fit hommage à l'évêque pour conjurer l'orage qui le menaçait, comme ayant été du parti du comte de Toulouse et des Albigeois. Ce Giraud Adhémar (le troisième du nom d'après le baron de Coston, le deuxième d'après M. de Boisgelin) avait épousé Mabille de Marseille. Il émancipa, en 1227, son fils Giraudet et lui donna Rochemaure. En 1301, Giraud Adhémar, seigneur de Rochemaure et d'Aps, exempte de la taille, sous la seule réserve de cas impérieux, ses sujets d'Aubignas. En 1310, un Giraud Adhémar, lègue à un autre Giraud, son fils, entre autres seigneuries, Montélimar, Rochemaure et Aps. Au XIVème siècle, Rochemaure passa à Louis d'Anduze, qui habitait alors le château de Chomérac; le 12 juillet 1399, Louis d'Anduse avait pour fils, Bermond d'Anduse. Philippe de Lévis, épousa, en 1395, Antoinette, héritière de la maison d'Anduze Des Lévis devenus, en 1578, ducs de Ventadour, le fief de Rochemaure passa aux Rohan, par suite du mariage, en 1694, d'Hercule Mériadec, duc de Rohan, avec Anne-Geneviève de Lévis, héritière de sa famille.
