La famiglia è oriunda di Reggio Emilia, si trova iscritta nella matricola delle famiglie reggiane dalla metà del secolo XVII ed ebbe la concessione della cittadinanza nobile di Reggio e patrizia di detta città, data ai Fratelli Pellegrino e Cristoforo di Paolo. Il primo di essi (n. l'8 aprile 1764, dec. l'8 marzo 1820) fu Canonico e Arciprete della Cattedrale di Reggio. Vicario Generale della Diocesi, ed oratore sacro assai reputato. Laureato in legge insegnò il diritto Romano nel Corso di Giurisprudenza in Reggio; poi Sacra Scrittura nel Seminario. Designato a Vescovo di Carpi, non volle accettare per impegni domestici. Lasciò molte opere a stampa ed inedite di Teologia e Scienze Sacre. E' ricordato da una bella epigrafe latina nella Cattedrale di Reggio.
