Ebbe uomini illustri nelle armi fin dal 1487, e Lucantonio era ascritto al Nobile Consiglio fin dal 1658. Con diploma 15 giugno 1717 l'Elettore di Baviera fregiò dell'ereditario titolo marchionale i due cugini Giovanni e Bonifacio Gonzati; ma, venuta meno la loro discendenza, il governo veneto trasferì il suddetto titolo al ramo superstite colla investitura del Settembre 1792. Il Marchese Vincenzo, vissuto sul declinare del XVIII secolo e nei primi anni del XIX, coltivò appassionatamente gli studj storici e coadiuvato da' suoi figli, Gio-Maria, Bernardo e Lodovico, fece una scelta e copiosa raccolta di opere stampate e manoscritte di autori e di argomenti vicentini, che fu poi generosamente donata alla città dal figlio Lodovico Arcidiacono della Cattedrale, ed ora trovasi collocata in apposita stanza nella Biblioteca Bertoliana di Vicenza.
