Si divise in due rami, cioè dei baroni di Santomango e Filetta, e dei baroni di Sancipriano e Castiglione. Per aver donato una sua proprietà per la costruzione della chiesa di S. Matteo, il Clero di Salerno ogni anno portava processionalmente al più anziano della famiglia un mondo d'oro, coll'effigie di S. Matteo e le armi dei Santomango. Ha goduto nobiltà nella città di Salerno al seggio di Portanova, à vestito l'abito dei cavalieri di Malta nel 1568, ed oltre i summenzionati, à posseduto altri 12 feudi. Un Pietro Santomango nel 1337 rapì la sposa di un signore della famiglia Aiello, nobile di Salerno, nel momento che usciva dalla chiesa dopo la cerimonia del matrimonio, per lo che corse molto sangue fra le due famiglie, e ne nacquero due ...
