Antica ed assai nobile famiglia feudataria, di origini genovesi e, più precisamente, dall'omonimo toponimo in provincia di Genova, la quale, trapiantatasi nel Meridione, venne ascritta al patriziato della città di Trani dal 1695, ed iscritta nel registro delle Piazze Chiuse. Con concessione del 10 maggio 1696, la famiglia venne decorata del titolo di principe di San Giovanni di Palagoria e, per concessione del 17 settembre 1682, venne decorato del titolo di marchese di Umbriatico (Calabria).
