La famiglia Roverizio Pianavia, oriunda di Ceriana e Pigna nel Nizzardo, poi fiorita lungamente a Sanremo, fu infeudata nel 1722 dal primo re di Sardegna, Vittorio Amedeo II, di Roccasterone col titolo comitale, per maschi primogeniti. Primo Conte di Roccasterone fu Giovanni Maria (dec. il 16 giugno 1734). Gli succedette il figlio pure di nome Giovanni Maria, il quale fu investito del feudo il 28 agosto 1734, ed ebbe della moglie Domenica Bongiovanni, fra altri figlioli, Stefano che, Cavaliere dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro, maggior generale, governatore di Fenestrelle, distintosi alla fazione militare di Saorgio (1793) era stato investito di Roccasterone il 7 maggio 1784. Fu l'ultimo investito, prima dell'abolizione del feudalismo in Piemonte.
