Es en Asturias donde aparecen con mayor antigüedad tres casas de R. Una estaba sita a poca distancia de la villa de Gijón; otra en el lugar de Cañamar, del Concejo de Llanes, y la tercera en la hoy parroquia de Cibuyo, del Ayuntamiento y partido judicial de Cangas de Tineo. De ahí, el que se atribuya, y acaso con razón, origen asturiano a este apellido. Varios genealogistas reconocen a la casa de la villa de Gijón como la originaria y troncal del linaje. Pero justo es consignar que si la del lugar de Añamar no fué la matriz y primitiva, al menos procedió y salió de la de Gijón con tan venerable antigüedad, que dió ocasió y motivo a los señores de ella para no reconocer dependencia de aquélla ni de ninguna otra, ni considerarse inferior en nobleza, lustre, notoriedad y poderío. Como ascendientes de esa casa figura Pascual R., que fué uno de los conquistadores de Ubeda y Baeza, según consta de la lista de los trescientos caballeros heredados en dichas ciudades por el rey don Fernando III, "el Santo", copiada por Martín de Ximeno en sus "Anales Eclesiásticos del Obispado de Jaén". Otras importantes casas del apellido R. hubo en distintas regiones españolas. Los datos que tenemos de la genealogía continuada de la casa del lugar de Cañamar, desde mediados del siglo XV, comienzan con Juan de R., Pariente Mayor y Señor de la Casa de su apellido, Alcalde de la Santa Hermandad, natural de Cañamar, nacido el año 1450. Otra casa muy antigua. Juan R., natural de Trujillo, hijo de Alonso García y de Catalina González, con su mujer Juana González, natural de Trujillo, hija de Diego Hernández y de Ana Rodríguez, y sus hijos Cristóbal, Alonso, Diego, Gaspar y Francisco, nombrado Funcionario del Virreynato por decreto de la Compañía de Indias el 6 agosto 1577, emprendió viaje a Nueva España el 3 agosto 1578 desde el puerto de Sevilla, según consta en el Archivo General de Indias.
