Antica ed illustre famiglia italiana, originariamente conosciuta come Rotolo ed oriunda dalla Lombardia, la quale passò primieramente in Genova con un Gaspare nel 1438. Ivi gli esponenti di questo casato conquistarono posizioni sociali di grande rilievo. Si ricordi quel Giambattista, artefice guelfo nel 1499 e nel 1501, che fu dei consiglieri. La casata fu poi ascritta alla nobiltà genovese ed aggregata all'albergo Pallavicino, dal 1528 al 1576, in persona di: Francesco, del fu Giambattista, e di Baldassarre e Benedetto, del detto Francesco. Nel medesimo periodo un ramo di questo casato si portò nel Regno di Napoli ove, a causa dei soliti fenomeni di fonetica dialettale, ben presto mutò il cognome in Ruotolo. Anche nel Regno di Napoli questa famiglia appartenne sempre alle classi più agiate.
