Antica, potente ed illustre famiglia originaria di Como. Asseriscono gli scrittori dell'origine romana e dell'appartenenza a questo casato di S. Eutichio, vescovo di Como, morto nel 539, e di Lamberto, arcivescovo di Milano nel 1021. Ma lasciando questa parte alla leggenda, la prima notizia genealogica, secondo il Litta, riguarda un'esenzione dai dazi concessa l'anno 988 ad Ariberto Rusca, cittadino comasco. I cognomi Rusca, Ruschi, Rusconni e Ruscone sono nei primi secoli alternativamente usati. In uno stesso storico documento trovasi, ad esempio, citato un fratello detto Rusca, un altro Ruscone, collettivamente poi Rusconi. I Rusca erano già potenti nel Comasco sin dai primordi del secolo XII e alla testa della fazione ghibellina che sostenne lunga lotta contro la guelfa dei Vitani.
