Antica ed illustre famiglia ghibellina originaria di Como, attestata dal XII sec. anche con il nome Rusconi, divenuta, poi, una delle più agiate del ducato di Milano. Nell'odierno territorio svizzero, dove dal XIII sec. la famiglia è presente in diverse località, ebbero maggiore rilievo le linee di Locarno, Bellinzona, Bironico (oggi com. Monteceneri) e Mendrisio, mentre a nord delle Alpi i Ruso fecero parte del patriziato cittadino di Lucerna, dal 1661. Nel complesso i Ruso contarono importanti notai, artisti ed ecclesiastici come pure influenti esponenti politici attivi sotto diversi governi. Il capostipite della famiglia fu Ruggero, cittadino e console di giustizia di Como (inizio del XIII sec.) nonché capo dei ghibellini comaschi, che in seguito presero il nome di "parte Ruscona".
