Linaje muy antiguo de Cataluña, de donde pasó a los reinos de Valencia, Mallorca y Aragón. Entre las casas catalanas de este apellido más principales figuran las que radicaron en al ciudad de Barcelona; en el lugar de Alella, del partido judicial de Mataró, en aquella provincia; en el lugar de Arenys de Munt, del partido judicial de Arenys de Mar (Barcelona); en la ciudad de Vic, de igual provincia; en el lugar de Folgueroles, del partido judicial de Vic, en la ciudad de Barcelona y en la villa de Sallent. Los de Sallent proceden de la casa pairal "la S. de Sant Ponc", en la comarca de Pla de Bages, provincia de Barcelona. A ella perteneció don Alfonso S. y Argemí, quien en 1926 fue agraciado con el título de conde de Egara por el rey Alfonso XIII. Su hijo don Antonio de S. y Amat fue segundo conde y le ha sucedido su hijo don Alfonso de S. y Paz. Al reino de Valencia pasaron los S. en los primeros tiempos del rey aragonés don Jaime I "el Conquistador", y se establecieron en la villa de Oliva, del partido judicial de Gandía (Valencia). Allí fundaron la noble casa solar de este apellido, de la que dimanó la rama, muy principal, que trasladó su residencia y edificó nueva casa solariega en la villa de Pego (Alicante).
