As suas origens são, tal como outros da mesma natureza, como Pinheiro ou Oliveira, de raíz toponímica, retirado de alguns dos locais deste nome existentes em diferentes locais da península. Os genealogistas espanhóis apontam-lhe como mais remotas origens a região de Alanje, enquanto que em portugal lhes apontam as freguesias de Salgueiro no Fundão e em Castelo-Branco. O que se sabe é que muitos que o usaram se distinguiram em diversos campos, merecendo dos nossos Reis as mais variadas Mercês Régias. Foi o caso, na época da Restauração de Manuel Rodrigues Salgueiro, filho de Gaspar Rodrigues Salgueiro, a quem foi concedido em 1660 Alvará de Moço de Câmara, com a condição de ir á India. De 1664 a 1666 foram concedidos Alvarás de Escudeiros Fidalgos logo aumentados a Cavaleiros Fidalgos a Manuel, Diogo, e Francisco Salgueiro,naturais de Tânger, filhos de Manuel Salgueiro.Outros se distinguiram como religiosos, como o Jesuíta, Francisco Salgueiro, lente da Universidade de Évora, ou o P.
