Cette famille, originaire du Quercy, se glorifie de compter parmi ses aïeux deux nobles chevaliers: Pierre et Etienne, qui tous deux suivirent, en 1006, Raimond de Saint-Gilles, comte de Toulouse, à la Terre Sainte. Godefroy de Bouillon honorait de son amitié ces deux frères jumeaux, qui périrent ensemble et furent enterrés dans la même tombeau (Histoire des Croisades, par Richard). C'est sur le vu de ses titres, remontant à 1099, que les commissaires chargés de la recherche de la noblesse rendirent en sa faveur, le 27 septembre 1666, un jugement de maintenue et que l'écusson de la famille fut placé dans la galerie de Versailles, salle de la 1er croisade.
