Tale cognominizzazione, direttamente o tramite ipocoristici, dovrebbe derivare dal nome medioevale Girardus, di cui si hanno tracce nel Codice Diplomatico della Lombardia medievale, nell'anno 1100, con "Girardus de Asula sacri palacii notarius" o con "Girardus Gnotrami de Leno notarius regis Henrici"; la cognominizzazione è riscontrabile, inoltre, in atti già nel 1300 a Savona dove troviamo, citato come testimone, un certo "Gullielmus Girardus". Essendosi segnalato nella guerra contro i Genovesi, un Francesco Sangirardo ed i suoi congiunti furono aggregati al gran Consiglio di Fano, nel 1381. Altro ramo. Antica famiglia cittadina.
