Assai antica famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, sorta dall'unione, per via matrimoniale, di due illustri casati meridionali. Il primo, ovvero quello dei Santelmo, al dir di alcuni autori, sarebbe un ramo della nobilissima famiglia Cantelmo e, pertanto, anch'essa ebbe origine da Everardo, ultimo figlio di Duncano re di Scozia, dal quale uscì la famiglia reale degli Stuard. Tal discendenza fu riconosciuta da Carlo II re d'Inghilterra con un atto del 1683, e da Carlo II re di Spagna, con un atto del 1688. In Abruzzo i C/Santelmo vennero con Giacomo nel 1284, che fu nominato dal re Carlo II d'Angiò Giustiziere di Abruzzo Citra.
