Famiglia siciliana che trae origine da un Gilotta o Giulio, cittadino nobile di Messina e figlio di Giovanni Gilberto che pare si trasferisse in Castiglione di Sicilia verso il 1523. Sposò in Randazzo, nel 1531, Marianna Varisano e Lanza e nel 1540 fu governatore di Castiglione e di Aidone con tutte le podestà civili e criminali. Fu aggregato alla nobiltà messinese ed a quella Senatoria Mastra Nobile. Furono insigniti, con privilegio del 18 febbraio 1618 di Filippo III, del titolo di don in persona di Caterina, e di tutti i discendenti maschi e femmine in perpetuo del predetto suo marito. Questa famiglia ebbe dottori in ambo le leggi, giudici, consultori, arcipreti, abati, protonotari apostolici, camerieri di onore dei pontefici, cavalieri di Malta, cavalieri del S.
