Daher bieten alte Glossen dafür præfectus, tribunus, procurator, causidicus, exactor, sogar quinquagenarius (also eine militärische Würde). Die älteste erreichbare Form (im Langobardischen, 7. Jahrhundert) lautet schuldhais. Von da sickert das Wort durch den schmalen rätoromanischen Streifen ins Alemannische (Ende des 8. Jahrhundert) und marschiert dann rüstig nach Norden. Im mittleren Osten hat die Amtsbezeichnung Schultheiß übrigens nie Boden gefaßt; auch im Altbayrischen setzt sie sich nur sehr vereinzelt nieder. Auf den vielfach wechselnden Bedeutungsinhalt des Amtstitels kann hier nicht eingegangen werden. Die ältesten Belege lassen in der Regel nicht erkennen, ob es sich noch um den Titel oder bereits um einen Zunamen handelt. Scultetus Seit dem ausgehenden XIII Jahrhundert, ab Karl IV. (1346-1378), haben die Kaiser Wappen verliehen, ohne die Begünstigten in den Adelsstand zu erheben. Im XV Jahrhundert haben sie den Pfalzgrafen mit der Wappenvergabe betraut, der seitdem auch Bürgerfamilien Wappen gewährte. ...
