Sobre el origen de este apellido hay una leyenda que algunos autores refieren. En mediados del siglo IX, los bizarros vizcaínos que tenazmente defendían sus montañas contra los ataques de los moros, eligieron por caudilla a Fortún López, poderoso y valiente caballero más conocido por "Zuria" y considerado como el primer Señor de Vizcaya. Un descendiente suyo, llamado Juan Zuriena, Capitán de cien hombres, acudió en ayuda del Rey de Aragón García Iñiguez en la batalla que sostenía frente a los infieles en las orillas de un río. Durante la lucha puso en práctica una nueva arma ofensiva que había inventado a modo de ballesta, con la que sus hombres arrojaron sobre el enemigo tal cantidad de guijarrros y con tal violencia, que lo pusieron en precipitada fuga. En memoria de esa hazaña tomó Juan Zuriena el sobrenombre de Segarra, que en vascuence significa guijarro, y sus descendientes continuaron usándolo hasta convertirlo en apellido. Así refiere la leyenda el origen de este linaje, origen muy dudoso y de imposible comprobación. Parece que su arranque lo tuvo en Vizcaya, peor no con la antigüedad a que la leyenda lo remonta. En Vizcaya hubo hidalgas casas en la villa de Bilbao, en la Merindad de Uribe y en el Duranguesado, todas apellidadas S., y de ellas debieron proceder, según lo descrubren sus escudos de armas, los que pasaron a Aragón, quedando allí establecidos y apellidándose S. En Cataluña radicaron familias apellidadas S. Otra casa muy antigua. De Vizcaya, con casas en la villa de Bilbao, en la Merindad de Uribe y en el Duranguesado. Son sus armas: De oro, con cuatro bandas de azur, y bordura de gules, lisa. ...
