I Serantoni, che i genealogisti lucchese fanno derivare dai Vernaccia si trovano presenti in Lucca al giuramento di Giovanni di Boemia nel 1331 con Franceschino, della contrada di S. Pietro Sonaldi, ed assumono il loro cognome al principio del secolo XV con ser Antonio, di Jacopo, di Nicolao. Dal 1432 al 1798 ebbero nel governo della Repubblica molti gonfalonieri ed anziani. Sostennero uffici e ambascerie come Pietro, di Jacopo, inviato dal 1582 al 1585 presso Filippo II di Spagna. Il P. Giuseppe Maria, dell'Ordine di S. Agostino, fu valentissimo idraulico del secolo XVIII ed autore di relazione sulle bonifiche del territorio lucchese, disegnò una grande carta topografica del dominio della Repubblica, e scrisse e pubblicò nel 1765 una "Apologia del Volto Santo".
