Antica e nobile famiglia originaria di Bologna propagatasi in Toscana e, successivamente, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Sull'origine di questa cognominizzazione vi sono pareri discordanti tra gli studiosi, secondo alcuni, infatti, deriva dal nome medioevale italiano "Guelfus", riscontrabile nei documenti storici fin dal XIII secolo; secondo altri deriva, invece, dal termine "guelfo" che veniva spesso scritto "ghelfo", e ne abbiamo un esempio nelle "Historie" di Ciprian Manente da Orvieto, scritto nel 1561.
