Nei tempi antichi, quando detta città ebbe la gloria di essere residenza di Sommi Pontefici, vantava una cinquantina di famiglie nobili, come risulta dagli statuti di detta città, ma coll'andar dei tempi, attese le guerre e gli assedi dalla medesima sofferti, specialmente per le fazioni fra guelfi e ghibellini, molte di esse si estinsero, altre impoverite perdettero la nobiltà coll'abbassarsi ad arti meccaniche ed altre si allontanarono da Anagni, sicché al principio del XVIII secolo furono ridotte a dodici, onde molte famiglie della prima civiltà chiesero di esservi ammesse.
