La tradizione che la famiglia discenda da un Tito dei Malatesta di Rimini, non sembra troppo fondata, anche se ad avvalorarla concorse, nel 1685, una pubblica attestazione della Magistratura civica di San Sepolcro. Il primo della famiglia che ricoprì in San Sepolcro la carica di gonfaloniere fu Bartolomeo, d'Agostino, nel 1535. Simile onore godettero i suoi discendenti, non solo nel paese di origine, ma anche in Livorno, dove si trasferirono ai primi del 600 e dove Pandolfo, di Federigo, fu gonfaloniere nel 1649. Un nipote di questi, Pandolfo, di Giovan Federigo, vestì per giustizia le divise di cavaliere stefaniano, il 26 luglio 1726. La famiglia fu ascritta alla nobiltà di San Sepolcro con decreto 20 aprile 1761, e alla nobiltà di Livorno con decreto 23 marzo 1768. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano col titolo di nobile di Livorno (mf.), in persona dei disc. da Guido, di Federigo, ...
