Assai antica e nobile famiglia, originaria del territorio della Mirandola, poiché si ha ricordo in documento del 25 marzo 1440 di un Michele de Tabachiis, abitante nella villa di Quarantoli vicinissima alla Mirandola. Si ha pure notizia di due notai di questo cognome, Michele e Alberto, che rogarono atti nel mirandolese, rispettivamente dagli anni 1515 al 1547 e dal 1550 al 1579. Di Camurana, villa del distretto di Modena, ma in confine col Mirandolese, era un certo Ippolito, di Niccolò Tabacchi, al quale i Conservatori della città di Modena il 10 dicembre 1640 concedevano la cittadinanza modenese per sé ed i suoi figli e discendenti in perpetuo.
