Orazio Spinola sposò una figlia di Guido Guerra, noto capitano di Pandolfo Malatesta sul finire del secolo XV, e da Genova si rifugiò a Cavina, luogo presso Brisighella, dando origine alla casata faentina di tal nome. Questa la tradizione, non sappiamo quanto attendibile. E' però fuori di discussione che i membri della famiglia di Faenza hanno sempre fatto uso d'uno stemma simile a quello degli Spinola di Genova, e che la loro famiglia, qualunque ne sia l'origine, può essere considerata come una delle più cospicue della città. Da tempo antico essi ebbero seggio nel Consiglio generale del Comune, e sin dalla prima metà del 700 portarono pacificamente il titolo comitale.
