L'une des plus puissantes et anciennes maisons de l'Auvergne, confins du Limousin. Citée depuis Albert, prieur de Bort, témoin en 1167 d'une charte concernant l'abbaye de Mozat. Assalit était possessionné en Combraille dès 1249. Filiation: Pierre (1288). Guillaume III, son descendant, épousa: 1° Guérine de Beaufort-Canillac, veuve en 1397 du vicomte de Narbonne, d'où postérité éteinte en 1477 dans les de Foix de Couzerans; 2° après 1415, Antoinette de Tourzel, fille de Morinot baron d'Allègre, et veuve de Jean Comptour d'apchon. De la même maison étaient sortis vers 1340: 1° les seigneurs de la Courtine, Mérichal, Montel, barons de Fernoël, éteints après 1550; 2° les seigneurs de la Villatte, Montroux, Peyrissat (Limousin), maintenus en 1666, éteints. Parmi les illustrations de cette maison on signale: trois chanoines-comtes de Brioude (1303-1531); des chevaliers bannerets. Beaux services militaires. ...
