E' costantemente tradizione che questa famiglia abbia avuto origine nel 1270 da Vanno, di Orvieto, congiuntosi con una fanciulla della cassata dei Filippeschi, pure di Orvieto. Le due famiglie Monaldeschi e Filippeschi, erano inimicissime fra di loro, e quindi Vanno, non potendo sposarsi con il consenso dei suoi, nè dei genitori della fanciulla, la rapì, si rifugiò nel Castello di Lugnano della Tiberina e, abbandonando il cognome Monaldeschi, dal suo nome Vanno costituì la futura casata dei Vannicelli, mettendo nello stemma, a ricordanza del fatto, due teste contrapposte, una bianca e l'altra nera, nel campo d'oro dei Monaldeschi, tenute legate da una fascia che cinge loro la fronte.
