An la villa de Legazpia, del partido judicial de Vergara, tuvo su primitivo solar este apellido, del que procedieron varias ramas que se extendieron por Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya y Castilla. Una de dichas ramas moró en la villa de Elgueta y otra en Mondragón, ambas de Guipúzcoa. De la casa de Elgueta procedió Domingo de U., que siguió y ganó pleito de hidalguía en 1626. Casó con doña Francisca de Asturrizaga y fueron padres de Domingo, Miguel y Juan de U. y Asturrizaga. El último contrajo matrimonio con doña Dominga Gurvidezar y procrearon a Juan de U. y Gurvidezar, bautizado en Elgueta el 13 de Abril de 1636, que celebró su enlace con doña María de Olave, naciendo de esta unión José de U. y Olave, bautizado en Zaldúa (Vizcaya), el 19 de Marzo de 1673, que en su mujer, doña Josefa Ibánez, tuvo a Juan de U. e Ibánez, bautizado en Logroño el 14 de Abril de 1705, que fué vecino de Ribaflecha (Rioja), y el 28 de Mayo de 1745 ganó Real provicisión de vizcainía en la Chancillería de Valladolid. De otra rama originaria de la casa de Elgueta fué también Joaquín Antonio de U. y Ureta, bautizado en castillo Elejabeitia el 8 de Febrero de 1755, que obtuvo otra Real provisión el 23 de Agosto de 1792. ...
