Fino dal 1308 ottenne il supremo dominio di Atene, convertita dai Latini in ducato. Se ne ànno memorie in Lecce nel 1201 in cui Gualtieri III, Conte di Brenna, fu il primo Conte di Lecce. A lui succedette nella contea il figlio Gualtiero IV, quindi Ugo che fu primo Duca di Atene. Gualtieri VI ultimo conte di Lecce, fu luogotenente in Firenze del Duca di Calabria. Fondò in Lecce l'antica chiesa di S. Croce nel 1355 e morì nel 1356 senza successione. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato ...
