The surname 'Valentine' is of English, and Scottish origin. It is derived from a medieval given name (from the Latin name 'Valentinus', a derivative of 'Valens'), which was not common in England, but is occasionally found from the end of the 12th century, probably as a result of French influence. The name was borne by a 3rd century saint and martyr, whose chief claim to fame is that his feast falls on the 14th of February, the date the traditional celebration of spring going back to the Roman fertility festival of Juno Februata.
