Le prime memorie risalgono al 1107, anno in cui i fratelli Rodolfo e Guglielmo, figli di Rainiero, accordavano la libertà ad un servo. Buonaccorso, ambasciatore del comune di Reggio nel 1237 ricevette promessa di ubidienza da molti abitanti di Vallisniera per Manfredo di Cornazzano podestà di Reggio. L'imperatore Federico III il 1 Febbraio 1469 creò Conte e Cavaliere un Giannantonio da Vallisniera, Camerlengo Ducale estense, soprannominato Mazzone. Oltre il suddetto feudo di Vallisniera, questa famiglia ha posseduto quelli di Nigone, Ramaceto e Monte Mischioso, di cui il sopradetto Giannantonio nel 1472 ricevette dal duca Ercole d'Este la rinnovazione dell'investitura. Nel secolo XIV si ha notizia di un Veltro da Vallisnera. Una sua figlia Adelasia andò sposa a Bartolomeo da Dallo, signore di Piolo, ed i fratelli suoi, Guglielmo e Lodovico, ...
