Originaria di Diano Castello in Liguria, si trapiantò in Genova nel XII secolo. Il suo progenitore fu un Ansaldo, il quale occupò le primarie magistrature della Repubblica, vivente nel 1197. Benedetto nel 1428 fu inviato podestà a Pera, nel 1440 entrò nell'albergo dei Franchi; Giacomo degli anziani nel 1470, ed un altro Benedetto fu pure degli anziani della Repubblica. In sui primordi del XVI secolo la famiglia Viele si divise in due rami, di cui l'uno, fondato da Agostino, continuò la propria discendenza sin oltre la metà del XVIII secolo, l'altro, fondato dal di lui fratello Giovanni, fu restituito in principio del XVI secolo in Diano Castello. Il ramo di Genova dette alla Chiesa due vescovi, Antonio di Asti, e trasferito poi nel 1386 alla sede di Savona, e Vincenzo successe allo zio in questa medesima sede nel 1443.
