Apellido gallego, oriundo de Portugal. Procede del solar de Vieira entre Duero y Miño, también conocido por Beira. Fue señor de Vieira, Gonzalo Coello, quien lo entregó como dote asu hija Doña María, al contraer matrimonio con Martín Teixeira de Azevedo, de cuyo enlace nació Gonzalo Teixeira, señor de las tierras de Filgueiras y Vieira. Don José V. y Clavijo, nació el 28 de diciembre de 1731, en el Realejo Alto, de Tenerife. Se dedicó a la carrera eclesiástica y fue denunciado al Santo Oficio por uno sus primeros sermones. Se consagró luego al estudio de nuestra historia y alentado por la famosa tertulia del Marqués de Villanueva del Prado, escribió en La Laguna el primer tomo de sus "Noticias sobre la historia general de las Islas Canarias". Se trasladó a Madrid con el honroso cargo de preceptor del hijo del Marqués de Santa Cruz; publicó allí su obra que fue desde entonces aplaudida dentro y fuera de España. Habiéndole agraciado el Rey con el Arcedianato de Fuerteventura, se embarcó en Cádiz y llegó a Canaria en Octubre de 1784, permaneciendo en esta ciudad hasta su muerte el 21 de febrero de 1813. El estudio del escudo heráldico familiar nos "habla" de quienes formaron el origen de la familia V., pues esa era su función, la de manifestar a los demás sus elementos diferenciales, pues la inclusión del elemento palo es la característica de los nobles de origen militar, (Palos) quiere aparentar los palos del "castrum" (campamento). Los esmaltes del arma de los V. pregonan los siguientes valores: el Gules es el símbolo de la fuerza, del poder, del amor ferviente a Dios y al prójimo, tal es el significado de este esmalte, a lo que habría que añadir el afán de dominio, el coraje, la audacia, la fortaleza y la magnanimidad, un alto porcentaje de este tipo de escudos familiares se dieron por actos de guerra. ...
