La casa de V., antiquísima y muy calificada en Asturias, reconoce por tronco y principal ascendiente al insigne guerrero Andeca, último duque de Cantabria (que murió en la batalla del rio Guadalete), por la línea de su nieto Vela Gimenez, hermano de Garci Gimenez, primer rey de Sobrarbe y Ribagorza. El espresado Vela Gimenez fué conde y gobernador de la provincia de Álava por encargo y merced del rey Don Alonso I, llamado el Católico. El mismo importante y honorífico cargo obtuvo su biznieto, llamado tambien Vela Gimenez, y le sucedió en el condado y gobierno de Álava su hijo Munio Vela o Vigila. A principios del siglo X figuraban ya entre los ricos-hombre y magnates de Asturias mucho hijos de este linage, como consta por reales donaciones y otros documentos de aquellos tiempos, en que firman como ricos-hombre Froila Vigila y Aznar Vigila, hermanos del conde Munio Vigila, Velasco Vigila, y el monge Vigila, que escribió un Libro de concilios, cuyo original aun en el siglo XVII existia en el monasterio del Escorial. Fernando Álvarez V. fué caballero muy ilustre en el reinado de Don Fernando II, en cuyos privilegios se encuentra con repetidas confirmaciones; y no solo le honró este monarca con la dignidad de rico-hombre, que ya habian obtenido sus ascendientes, sino que le dió el gobierno de Tineo, y despues el de todo Asturias.
