Segun Don Miguel de Salazar, los que llevan por apellido el patronímico Mendez reconocen por tronco y progenitor al conde Don Mendo, señor de Trastamara, en Galicia, que casó con Doña Juana Romaez, hija del conde Don Roman y nieta de Don Fruela Mendez, el primero que aparece en la historia con este patronímico Mendez. Fué descendiente suyo Ucilo Mendez, rico-hombre que vivia por los años de 774.
