L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una modificazione, dovuta ad errori di tradizione manoscritta e/o a variazioni di fonetica dialettale, del toponimo austriaco "Villach", probabilmente, luogo natio di un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, membri di tal casato ottennero il cavalierato, dal Senato della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, in ricompensa dell'impresa, cui parteciparono nel 1447, compiuta con il respingere le truppe dell'arciduca d'Austria Sigismondo, aldilà dei confini della Repubblica. Ma, d'altronde, la famiglia, sempre, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Edoardo, ambasciatore a Carlo V, in Modena, nel 1529; Gilberto, provveditore in Treviso, vivente nel 1557; Saverio, ambasciatore ordinario della Repubblica Veneta, vivente nel 1562; Cav.
