Este antiguo y noble apellido tiene sus orígenes en el De'Vellani, usándose ambos como uno mismo. Este linaje es oriundo de Gubbia de donde se trasladó a Reggio E. a fines del año 1272 con Tiberio Villani quien fuera Magistrado Supremo del Reino aquel año. En el siglo XVII, el Capitán Marcantonio D'Vellani, quien había nacido en Reggio, el 28 de agosto de 1660, se casó con la regiana Flerida Degli Averoldi. Antonio D'Vellani, hombre de letras, perteneció a la "Academia de los Ascensos" a finales del siglo XVII. Tuvo dos hijos: el Capitán Michele Arcangelo y su hijo Piramo Antonio Villani que parecen haber sido los últimos de esa rama y Piramo D'Vellani, Comandante Coronel de las tropas forenses, nacido en Reggio, el 4 de enero de 1685 y con éste continuó la familia. Su hijo Pellegrino V. fue también Comandante Coronel, fue escritor y dejó un compendio de los milagros de la Virgen de la Chiara de Reggio en conjunto con Giovanni Miari; está inscrita en verso y un soneto sobre Mauriziano, incluído en el Guasco. Tuvo muchos hijos entre los cuales el primogénito fue Guiseppe Villani, quien se convirtió en el tronco de las generaciones posteriores. Los caballeros de este linaje fueron distinguidos con títulos y se extendieron a lo largo de Italia. Una rama de esta familia pasó a España , donde este apellido se extendió por toda la península con numerosas casas solariegas. Por referencias de historiadores de la época y otras averiguadas por Araldis en los archivos y registros oficiales y otros privados, podríamos afirmar,que éste escudo u otro muy similar a él, apareció inicialmente desde el siglo XI al XIV, particularmente en la batalla de Uclés, a finales del siglo XI, donde fue muerto el infante D. Sancho hijo de Alfonso VI "El Batallador", Rey de Castilla y León y de Doña Zaida, hija de Motamid de Sevilla.
