Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Altamura, poi passata anche in Roma e Picerno, di chiara ed avita virtù, conosciuta come Viti o Vitti (de), propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione andrebbe ricercata in una variazione del cognomen latino "Vitus". In ogni modo, la casata appartenne alla nobiltà di Altamura sin da tempi assai remoti. Nell'anno 1600, essa divenne feudataria della terra di Carafa, in Calabria mentre nell'anno 1714 fu fregiata dall'Imperatore Carlo VI del titolo di conte trasmissibile per ordine di primogenitura.
