Antica famiglia francese, di chiara ed avita virtù, un cui ramo, anteriormente al XVI secolo, passò a risiedere in Liguria, propagandosi, successivamente, in diverse regioni d'Europa. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome "Guillaume", appartenuto, probabilmente, ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite.
