Antica ed assai nobile famiglia vicentina, ricca e ornata di uomini illustri per la nobiltà del sangue e per scienza, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nel 1260, come riporta una cronaca vicentina, furono Cristoforo e Goffredo, q. Marco Zago, i loro maggiori. In seguito esercitarono il notariato, ottennero la cittadinanza di Vicenza nel 1660 ed entrarono in quel consiglio nobile nell'anno 1732. Ortensio, per il suo valore nelle scienze matematiche ed idrauliche, venne insignito con il titolo di cancelliere e di conte dalla Repubblica Veneta, come venne registrato nei Sopra Feudi nel 1730. Diversi rami della casata fiorirono anche in altri luoghi. A Castelfranco nel secolo XIV erano denominati Zaghi (quindi Zaghis), oriundi di Vedelago, che, si ritiene, sia il luogo di nascita del pittore Giorgione.
