Dicen algunos autores que la primitiva casa de este noble y antiguo linaje radicó en la anteiglesia de Z. (cuyo nombre tomó), del partido de Guernica (Vizcaya), Otra casa hubo en el Duranguesado. Pasí a Guipúzcoa, fundando nuevas casas en las villa de Tolosa y Legazpia, esta última del partido de Vergara. Los individuos de la casa de Tolosa solieron usar unidos los apellidos Z. y Aguinaga. En documentos fidedignos consta la filiación siguiente: Martín de Z.-Auinaga, era vecino de Aguinaga, en el Concejo de Usúrbil, y partido de San Sebastián, en 1465, año en el que, en unión de Juan de Z. y otros convecinos suyos, litigó contra Juan Ibáñez de Echeverría, maniobrero de Santa María de Zumárraga, por la exacción de cinco corderos, que a título de primicia debida a dicha iglesia, les había aprehendido, y que ellos protestaron no deber a su parroquia de Aguinaga. Fué su hijo. Estibaliz de Z.-Auinaga, casado con doña Catalina de Zabaleta, a la que hizo madre de Martín de Z.-Aguinaga y Soraiz, que sigue, y Juan de Z.-Aguinaga y Soraiz, nacido en Zumárraga en el 1524, y casado en 1550 con doña Catalina de Machain, de la que tuvo a Domingo de Z.-Aguinaga y Machain, nacido en 1551 y casado en Villarreal de Urrechu en 1577, con doña María de Echeverría e Irigoyen, en la que procreó a Agueda de Zaldúa y Echeverría, mujer de su primo Sebastián de Iturbe y Z., que volveremos a citar.
