Antica famiglia veneta, di chiara ed avita virtù, la quale, al dir di illustri genealogisti, sarebbe un ramo collaterale della nobile famiglia mantovana Zanelli, fregiata del titolo di marchesi di Castelnuovo Belbo, nel 1665. D'altronde, tal cognominizzazione sembra aver tratto la propria origine dal fatto di essere i capostipiti dei figli di uno Zanella; il suffisso in -ato, infatti, ossia una forma patronimica tipicamente veneta, sta per figlio della parte precedente il suffisso, cioè di uno Zanella o Zanello, ovvero di alcuni Zanelli.
