Las casas solares del linaje de este noble apellido radicaron en la villa de Oñate y en el barrio de Anguiozar, cercano a la villa de Elgueta, todo en el partido de Vergara (Guipúzcoa). Pedro López de Zuleta, era vecino de Oñate en, 1388. Casó con doña Elvira Sánchez y fueron padres de Marina López de Z., esposa de Pedro Ibáñez de Hernani, que la hizo madre de Pedro Ibáñez de Hernani y Z., sacerdote racionero de San Miguel de Oñate en 1464, que titulándose Mayoral de Ercilla, puso pleito a Sancho García de Garibay, de Urdaneta y Garibay. También era vecino de Oñate en 1545, Juan López de Z., casado con doña María de Aizaga, a la que hizo madre de Juan de Z. y Aizaga. Martín López de Z. probó su hidalguía ante la Justicia ordinaria de Mondragón, en 1596 y Bartolomé de Z. en 1679; Juan de Z., ante la de Villarreal de Urrechu, en 1618; Ignacio, Pedro y José de Z., ante la de Eibar en 1762, Simón, Antonio y Francisco de Z., ante la de Oñate, en 1665. El Capitán Francisco de Z., natural de Elgueta, envió, en 1681, lámparas de plata y ornamentos para la iglesia paroquial de dicha villa. También mandó hacer un nuevo retablo para el altar mayor de la misma iglesia en 1684, y en 1689 fundó la Santa Misión en las iglesias de Elgueta y Anguiozar. José Javier de Z. fué Caballero de la Orden de Calatrava y probó su hidalguía en Vergara en 1786. Javier de Z., vecino de Oñate en 1750, casó con doña María Antonia de Uriarte y Ugarte, de la familia del Capitán José de Ugarte. En la actualida encontramos este apellido extendido en la zona del País Vasco-Francés y Europa en general, a mediados del siglo. A principios del siglo XX, fueron muchos los hombres y mujeres que portando tan ilustre apellido, cruzaron el Atlántico en busca de fortuna y nuevos horizontes.
