Este apellido, de origen patronímico, derivado del nombre propio de Alvar o Alvaro, tiene su rama más antigua en los de A. de Asturias, con casas solariegas en el Concejo de Nava, partido judicial de Cangas de Onís, en Castropol, en Cangas de Tineo y otras localidades asturianas. A uno de estos linajes perteneció Don Rodrigo A., Fidalgo de Barcelos en Portugal, que con su mujer Doña Mencía de Cabrera, fueron pobladores de la ciudad de Telde. Su única hija Doña Juana Francisca A., fue la primera esposa del Capitán Marcos de León, Regidor Perpetuo de Gran Canaria por Real Merced del Señor Don Felipe II de 9 de enero de 1597, fundador de una capellanía por su testamento ante Matías de Ávila en 15 de abril de 1609. Hijo único de este matrimonio fue Don Rodrigo de León, nacido en Telde y bautizado en 19 de agosto de 1565, Capitán de Infantería española y Regidor Perpetuo, como su padre, de la Gran Canaria. Casó en Telde el 27 de abril de 1597, con Doña Susana del Castillo Tamariz, hija de Agustín Inglés del Castillo. De este matrimonio nació como único hijo, Don Rodrigo de León y A., tronco directo de los Condes de la Vega Grande de Guadalupe. Hubo otro A. de origen portugués, que fue Conquistador de la isla de Tenerife, llamado Luis A. y estuvo casado con María Hernández, ambos naturales de Machicho en la isla de la Madera. ...
